Noale N. "Grandpa" Bates of Norman died Friday, February 29 at the age of 89 Meadowlake Estates
in Oklahoma City. He was born on January 23, 1919 at Asher,
Oklahoma to Horace Eugene Bates and Olive Franklin Moore Bates.
He completed his education in the public school system at Asher before joining the U. S. Navy in
1943. He served as a gunman aboard the S.S. Samuel Brannor until he was honorably discharged in
1946. Noale was a proud American and honored to serve his country.
After serving in the navy, he worked as a brick layer in Louisiana and Oklahoma for thirty years. Then
he was a glass glazer for eighteen years in Norman while building carports in his spare time. He was
a hard worker who could build or repair anything. He was always helping friends and family with
home repairs or fixing machinery of all types.
When not working or spending time with his family, Noale liked to dance, listen to bluegrass music,
travel and camp. Noale was a dignified, sociable gentleman who enjoyed the company of friends
whether it was meeting at Braum's for coffee or sharing stories on the front porch. He was a past
member of the Moose Lodge of Norman, and he was a member of the Church of Christ.
After raising two sons, he met  Yvonne Moore, and they blended their families for
twenty-eight happy years. He assisted Yvonne in running a day care for fifteen years and during this
time, he became "Grandpa" to dozens of children who looked forward to Grandpa delivering the
donuts or posing for pictures with them in their Halloween costumes. Grandpa always had a soft spot
for "his kids" and his babies. Skipper and Lassie.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne and his sons, Scott Bates and fiancee, Kathy of Muskogee, Jimmy
Bates of Norman, Lloyd Collins of Norman, Frank Collins and wife Nona of Harrah and his
